Dead Woman Discovered in Swamp
by Paolo Waxby
One day in 1927, it dawned on Martha Raymond, housewife and mother of three, that she no longer cared. She slit her husband's throat in his sleep and retreated to a thatch hut along the Amazon River, several hundred miles from the city of Manaus. There, she wrote in excess of 240,000 letters addressed to a certain "Mordecai." Her decomposed body was found slumped over a rudimentary table in 1962 by a pair of anthropologists from Louisiana.
